A Selective History of the Twentieth Century

The Beginnings (1900-1910)

1900 - Sometime in the first five years of this century, Robert Wynne, the Wynne who made the crossing from Ireland to Australia, dies. It is not known what ship he travelled to Australia on, why he came, or where he first settled. He had a milk run in Box Hill and had eight children in Australia. The Wynnes came from County Cork in Ireland, the coat of arms pictured at right. Where they came from before that, nobody knows.

13th Feb 1901 - John Henry Shannon and Mary-Anne Collar, Katie's parents, are married in a registry office in London. They will have eight children. He lists his occupation as 'labourer' but he he already fought in South Africa and will again in France.

1901 - Australia becomes a Federation.

22nd Feb 1902 - Henry Francis Sandford and Clara Pauline Noske are married in Warricknabeal, Victoria. They will have six children, including Bert Sandford.

13th March 1905 - Kathleen Shannon, aka Katie is born in Queen Charlotte's Hospital, Westminster, London, England.

27th Jan 1908 - Bert is born in the dry Wimmera town of Murtoa in western Victoria.

The War Years (1911-1920)

April 15, 1912 - World's largest ship, some would say world's largest metaphor about pride, Titanic, strikes an iceberg and sinks.

1912 - Amundsen reaches South Pole, Scott and his companions die returning from the Pole.

1914-1918 - World War I - Pa Wynne serves in France and Belgium in the Signal Corps

26th August 1914 - Katie's father, John Shannon, enlists in the Northumberland Fusiliers and goes to war.

1914 - Henry Sandford, moves to the pub in Diapur after several years running a farm, working as a skins dealer, on the railways and at the Victoria Market.

April 24 1915 - Gallipoli

July 3, 1916 - Battle of the Somme

1917 - Russian Revolution

16th March 1918 - Bert's grandfather, Johann Noske, who was born in Hamburg in Germany in 1826 dies in Victoria aged 91.

December 1919 - Kingsford Smith wins prize for flying from Britain to Australia in under thirty days.

The Roaring 20s (1921-1929)

26th November 1921 - William Francis Wynne and Edith Mary Vincent are married in St Thomas' Church, Essendon.

1921 - Henry Sandford moves the family to Nhill.

1925 - Henry Sandford moves young Bert and family to Moonee Ponds, in Melbourne, closer to a young woman who hasn't even arrived in Australia yet.

1st November 1925 - Cup Day, and Katie arrives in Sydney with Mrs J.C. Williamson. She is twenty years old but she wont stay in Sydney long.

4th November 1926 - Pauline Noske, Bert's grandmother who was born in Poland dies in Victoria aged 91.

May 1927 - Charles Lindbergh completes first solo non stop flight from New York to Paris.

1928 - Mickey Mouse is born

October 24th 1929 - Black Thursday on Wall Street. The Great Depression - worldwide economic downturn begins.

Depression Times (1931-1939)

1930 - Henry Sandford, Bert's father dies.

27th September 1930 - Bert marries Katie in a registry office in Melbourne.

10th December 1930 - Emily Emmerson, Nana Wynne's mother from Navarre in Victoria, dies aged 70.

1932 - Pauline Sandford born.

1932 - Sydney Harbour bridge opens

January 1933 - Bodyline series. 'There are two sides out there, and only one of them is playing cricket'

31st May 1933 - Bill Wynne is born; the Depression finally ends. The two events are most likely unrelated.

August 1934 - Bradman's record partnership with Ponsford (388, 451) help Australia regain the Ashes

14th September 1934 - Kath is born and comes to live in Essendon, already the suburban heartland of the family.

1935 - Bill's grandmother, Annie O'Gorman, who was born in Dromana, Ireland, dies in Melbourne.

13th September - 1937 - Irene Sandford is born.

July 1938 - John Shannon, Katie's father, dies in London aged 58.

1939 - Clarinda Webb, Nana Wynne's grandmother dies in England aged 95. She was born in 1943 in Cornall, England.

War and Peace (1940-1949)

1939-1945 - World War II - Bert serves in the Air Force in Borneo.

1940 - Battle of Britain - 'Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few' (Churchill)

January 1941 - Pa Wynne's brothers fight in the battle of Tobruk

May 1941 - Bismarck sunk.

December 1941 - Pearl Harbour - Japan enters the war.

Feb 1942 - Darwin bombed

June 1942 - U.S. Navy defeats Japanese at the Battle of Midway, turning point in the war in the Pacific.

June 6, 1944 - D Day - Allies land at Normandy, beginning final stage of World War II

August 1945 - Hiroshima bombed with atomic weapon.

1948 - Ghandi assassinated.

1949 - Kath watches the drawn Grand Final between Essendon and Melbourne. They are defeated in the replay a week later; Kath, understandably, cries.

Baby Boomers (1950-1959)

1951 - Korean War

May 29th 1953 - Hilary and Tenzing stand atop of the world's tallest mountain, Everest.

14th June 1953 - Katie's mother, Mary Anne Collar, dies in London aged 75. She is buried in Westminster, London.

29th October 1955 - Kath and Bill are married in Christ Church, St Kilda. They honeymoon in Coolongatta, playing the hokey pokey but not surfing.

17th April 1956 - Penny Turner is born in Newcastle, NSW.

1956 - Kath and Bill move into their new house in Xavier Street, Oak Park.

1956 - Bert officiates at the Melbourne Olympics.

30th October 1956 - During the Olympics in Melbourne, Warrick is born at Sacred Heart Hospital

February 1958 - Manchester United, the cream of English soccer, lose most of their team in a plane crash.

26th July 1958 - Andrew is born.

26th March 1959 - Bert's mother, Clara Noskie, dies in Melbourne aged 89. She was born in 1870 in Mt Gambier, South Australia.

The Swingin' Sixties (1960-1969)

24th May 1960 - Christian Gates is born, ushering in an era of freedom and flowered clothing

1961 - Soviet Union puts first man in space.

April 1961 - Bay of Pigs invasion sparks Cuban Missile crisis and Cold War.

12th June 1960 - John Anthony Wynne is born, reputedly the cutest baby born this century.

1963 - John Kennedy assassinated.

17th January 1964 - Sally Anne Wynne is born. World stops temporarily.

1966 - 17 Australians killed in the Battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War

July 1969 - Neil Armstrong walks on the moon.

September 1969 - Gabrielle Foster is born, ending the era of freedom and flowered clothing.

The Soulful Seventies (1970-1979)

October 1970 West Gate Bridge collapses

Jan 30, 1972 - Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland; thirteen killed.

September 5, 1972 - Israeli athletes killed by terrorists at the Munich Olympics

14th July 1973 - Pa Wynne dies in Essendon, Victoria, aged 75.

December 1973 - The Wynnes move from Oak Park to Frankston ('and that has made all the difference')

1974 - Warrick finishes school.

1975 - Whitlam Government dismissed by Governor General,  Sir John Kerr.

Greed is Good (1980-1989)

23rd August 1980 - Warrick and Penny are married at Monash University chapel.

December 1980 - John Lennon assassinated by madman in New York.

July 1981 - Charles and Diana married

January 1982 - Warrick and Penny leave Melbourne to spend a year in Manly, NSW.

1983 - Andrew and Danee married.

September 1983 - Warrick and Andrew watch Essendon defeated in the Grand Final by Hawthorn by a record margin. (83 points)

September 1983 - Australia wins Americas Cup

6th December 1983 - Phoebe Kate Wynne born in Frankston Hospital.

10th December 1983 - Daniel Wynne born.

September 1984 - Essendon win their first flag since 1965 and Warrick and Andrew are there to see it. Essendon win it again in 1985.

10th May 1985 - Harriet Wynne born.

11th July 1987 - Nana Wynne dies, aged 89.

3rd August 1987 - Marissa Wynne born.

Millennium Times (1990-1999)

September 1990 - Katie and Bert celebrate 60 years of marriage.

September 1993 - Essendon defeat Carlton to win the Grand Final

March 1995 - Andrew marries Gabrielle Foster at Shoreham Catholic Church followed by a reception at the Briars.

3rd September 1991 - Elliot Gates born

February 1993 - Bert dies in Frankston, aged 85.

April 1993 - Warrick and Penny travel to Europe, returning to the Vincent graves in Cornwall and finding the Wynne graves in County Cork, Ireland.

26th July 1993 - Alexander Gates born.

September 1993 - Essendon wins the Grand Final again.

22nd September 1994 - Nicholas Wynne born.

25th August 1995 - Edward Gates born

13th September 1995 - Stephanie Wynne born

12th Feb 1997 - Olivia Wynne is born

27th October 1997 - William Gates is born.

September 2000 - Essendon wins the Grand Final again.
